Violations of environmental legislation are one of the main factors posing a threat to the conservation conditions of flora and fauna in Europe and around the world. Just in terms of environmental crime, estimates by Interpol and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)1 reveal that illegal trade generates a volume of USD 91 to 258 billion dollars annually, thus making it the second most lucrative crime in the world, surpassed only by drug trafficking.
